Lego®-induced seizures From an exceptional case towards the building blocks of generalised epilepsy

چکیده
Reflex seizures are seizures that are elicited by sensory or cognitive stimuli. These stimuli can be very diverse but are usually highly specific within one patient. The type of seizures that are induced by these stimuli can be tonic-clonic seizures, myoclonic jerks with or without absences, and absences with facial myoclonus. Focal seizures can also occur. A wide range of different stimuli have been reported. The most well-known type of stimulus is flickering light (lights at a dance party, television screen). Some of the more specific examples are:micturition/defecation-induced epilepsy and Mahjong (a Chinese game) -induced epilepsy. An example of focal seizures are telephone induced seizures, with epileptic discharges in the lateral temporal lobe of the dominant hemisphere. Seizures provoked solely by specific stimuli are considered to be rare. However, seizures provoked by stimuli in idiopathic generalised epilepsy (IGE), especially juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), are not uncommon. Photostimulation is the most common stimulus in JME patients, but various other stimuli have been described. A stimulus consisting of a specific task combining sensory and cognitive stimuli leads to so-called praxis-induced seizures. We report a patient with a seizure induced by playing with Lego bricks. To our knowledge, a case of a Lego-induced seizure has never been reported before.

The protective effect of carvacrol on kainic acid-induced model of temporal lobe epilepsy in male rat
Background and Objective: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is a chronic neurological disorder with spontaneous recurrent seizures and abnormal intracranial waves. Since the role of oxidative stress in the occurrence of epilepsy is inevitable, it seems that the use of antioxidants can prevent some of the complications resulting from this disease. This study was designed to assess the protective effe...
متن کاملThe ameliorative effects of sesamol against seizures, cognitive impairment and oxidative stress in the experimental model of epilepsy
Objective(s):A growing interest has recently been attracted towards the identification of plant-based medications including those with protective effects against cognitive impairment. Sesamol has shown promising antioxidant and neuroprotective effects, therefore, we aimed to evaluate its therapeutic potential in epilepsy which is commonly associated with oxidative stress and cognitive impairmen...
متن کاملAnticonvulsant Effect of Cicer arietinum Seed in Animal Models of Epilepsy: Introduction of an active Molecule with Novel Chemical Structure
Background: Cicer arietinum (Chickpea) is one of the most important harvests in the world with high nutritional value. Lack of essential oils in the seeds of Chickpea is an advantage in search for drug-like molecules with less toxicity. We evaluated anticonvulsant effect of C. arietinum in common animal models of epilepsy. Methods: Dichloromethane extract was obtained from C. arietinum seeds by...
متن کاملThe Effect of Hepatocyte Growth Factor on Learning and Memory Abilities in a Rat Model of Kainate-Induced Epilepsy
Background and Objective: Epilepsy as a chronic neurological disorder causes inherent seizures and learning and memory failure. Since there is no acceptable control of seizures in some patients with the current recommended drug therapy, new medications with different mechanisms of action are needed. Here, the beneficial effect of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) was evaluated in an experimental m...
متن کاملPattern sensitive epilepsy: a case report.
A child with pattern sensitive epilepsy is reported. She had both absences and generalised seizures. The latter occurred spontaneously but the former followed concentration on patterned materials. These self-induced seizures appeared to have an affective component. The EEG showed generalised atypical spike and wave discharges both in the resting state and during intermittent photic and pattern ...
